Timber Framer, Historic Restoration & Sheet Metal Roofs.

Fitzgerald's Heavy Timber Construction, Inc. is a general contractor experienced in both new timber frame construction and in historic restoration. We invite you to get to know us better by scrolling down this page for links to some of our historic construction and preservation specialties:

New Timber Frame Construction.  Maybe it is just us, but we feel that no other material or form so eloquently and dramatically expresses the essence of a structure as a handmade timber frame. As a full service traditional timber frame company, we bring many efficiencies to both the design and the production of the custom post and beam structure. We operate our own sawmill so that we can control the quality and availability of the timbers that we use. This traditional technology is far superior to modern construction methods, both structurally and aesthetically. We post some examples of both public and private clients here.  (Timber frame shown located in Washington County, Maryland.)

Hand Hewn Post, Beams and Timbers.  Fitzgerald's Heavy Timber Construction, Inc. is proud to have on its staff some of the most skilled and productive craftsmen producing traditional hand finished posts, timbers and beams in the country today. Working within a long established tradition, these craftsmen are artists with an axe, an adze or a knife. They produce powerful architectural elements which add credibility and beauty to any structure. Examples shown. (Shaved post shown located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in Frederick County.)

Barn Restorations.  After a century or more of hard service and unrelenting exposure to the elements, many of America's barns and historic agricultural buildings are suffering from structural damage brought on by years of sustained neglect. Long experience with these type of timber framed buildings and their problems allows us to understand and efficiently address their needs. Our dedicated timber framers can faithfully reproduce the most complex period joinery and hand hewn finishes, as necessary.  (Barn restoration shown located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in Montgomery County.)

Covered Bridges.  Because of their long spans, timber framed covered bridges present engineering and construction challenges beyond that of most historic structures. We welcome the structural complexities presented by covered bridge building and restoration. Several examples shown.  (Bridge shown is on Roddy Road in Frederick County, Maryland)

New Log Cabins.  Emblems of the simple lives that our ancestors lived during the time of the first settlement, log cabins became a symbol of hard times that later generations tried to forget, often literally covering up the logs with clapboards or plaster. This was a good thing for us because these coverings have protected these important historic structures from the elements. We show here one of our new log cabins, authentically produced and hand detailed to be indistinguishable from true historic work.  (Log cabin shown is in Clarksburg, Maryland, Montgomery County.)

Standing Seam Metal Roofing.  A handsome and most durable roofing, standing seamed metal roofing was the material of choice for all types of structures for more than a century. The economics and aesthetics of it are now again extremely favorable, and we have done installations on very high end new homes as well as historic structures. Almost any available roofing metal, including copper, can be used with little variation in labor cost. Our clients love it and we believe it is a material whose time has come. Several projects are shown.  (Sheet metal project shown is located in Hanover County, Virginia.)

Barn Conversions.  With suburban sprawl and the widespread loss of the family farm, creative adaptive re-use is the only alternative to demolition for many of the historic barns which used to anchor the rural landscape. With their handsome timber frames and wide open plans, they easily lend themselves to a wide variety of designs and new applications. Here, we show a conversion for a school.  (Project shown located in Frederick County, Maryland.)

Unique Mission and Facility.  Our unique mission has led us to assemble a unique collection of equipment from different eras, equipment that is in every case state of the art for the task required. We operate our own sawmill and maintain our own roofing sheet metal shop. We invite you to get to know us better by seeing some of the indispensable tools and machinery which we use every day and which help to define our work.  (Our sawmill is located in Thurmont, Maryland.)
